9 Ways in which Your Fleet Can Reduce CO2 Emission

Environmental pollution has become a serious issue over the past decade. Fleet management companies have been looking for various methods to decrease carbon emissions.

Of the nearly 7 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases the U.S. alone emits every year, 27 percent of those emissions come from the transportation sector.

So what are the steps that can be implemented to reduce carbon emission?

1. Service and maintenance of vehicles

A poorly maintained vehicle will consume more gas than a well serviced one.  A regularly serviced vehicle will burn less gas and thus ensuring less green house gas emissions.

It is not just the engine you have to be concerned about. For example, maintaining the right tyre pressure will increase the mileage of a vehicle by 3 percent.

Remember that the environmental impact is visible throughout your supply chain. . Also as an added advantage, your vehicle will last longer and perform better.

2. Avoid unnecessary journeys

The best way to reduce carbon emission is to not start the engine at all. Unless it is necessary to be in person somewhere, opt for teleconferences for your discussions.

Face to face interaction can be avoided with the help of latest technologies where a person needn’t travel to meet someone. It will help save your organisation a considerable cost and also valuable time by keeping travel at minimum.

3. Optimize delivery schedules

There are certain organizations that opt for case to case deliveries. But in the same scenario if they choose to deliver by batch, it will make a significant difference, making it possible to carry larger loads over fewer trips.

You must balance the benefits of batching against the needs of your customers in order to achieve optimum results from it. It becomes easier to optimize delivery schedules with the help of good fleet management software.

4. Use of GPS fleet management software

Good fleet management software is essential for a company as it determines the best route for vehicles and updates the status of each vehicle.

By using fleet management software you can accurately assess the real time driving patterns as well as the historic data so that you can map out an optimal route.

Some fleet management software comes with features like anti-idling technology and vehicle tracking. With this you can monitor in real time how the drivers are performing and see if the status of the vehicle is idle or running.

5. What gets measure can be managed

If you are actively measuring and reporting the emissions, it will be easy to gather the data required for creating a report. From the report, you would be able to understand if the emissions are normal or not, prompting you to take required action.

6. Responsible driving

Even though optimal fuel economy varies from vehicle to vehicle, after a particular speed limit (70 to 80 kmph) most fleet vehicles lose mileage.

Unnecessary acceleration and aggressive braking will lead to spending more fuel. In case it is a heavier vehicle that hauls heavy loads, the wastage is even more.  So, driving responsibly itself reduces the carbon footprint to a small degree.

7. Reduce idling

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a standard heavy-duty truck burns roughly one gallon of diesel for every hour that it’s left idling.

You may be thinking that your vehicle is small and it doesn’t waste fuel by idling.

But multiply the number of vehicles that are idling and you will get an idea of the effect you are having on the environment. You don’t want to waste on fuel and create unwanted pollution.

8. Promote and Adopt Electric Vehicles

While they may not seem to be practical to you right now, using electric vehicles can reduce the carbon footprint significantly. Explore new electric vehicles in the market and weigh your options before purchasing new vehicles for your fleet.

9. Driver Awareness

We could say all we want about best practices to reduce CO2 emission. But, it is the drivers who have to make it happen to a large extent.

So try to create awareness among drivers about carbon emissions and their environmental impact and offer rewards for the “Greenest Driver” if possible.

Tying It All Together

CO2 emission is a matter of concern when there is an urge to protect the environment.

Effluents discharged to the environment will adversely affect the climate and also pollute our surroundings. In this blog we have discussed the various steps that can be taken to reduce or minimize the carbon emissions.
